Favorite restaurant – Füssen

Füssen is a quaint little town in the south of Germany, that I live close to (in the summertime anyway; in the winter it can be quite far away from wherever I’m hanging out at that time) and lots of tourists go there. There is an old monastery, lovely little streets and it has been used in the back ground of the movie The Great Escape. I watched it a few years ago and suddenly (after the escape…) I recognized different buildings from Füssen. Later on in the movie they even fly over Neuschwanstein Castle, just a few kilometers away. Funnily enough, the escape scenes are all supposedly taking place in very different places in Germany, hundreds kilometers away from one another, but was all filmed within 30 square kilometer.

Anyway, back to Füssen: it is a lovely town to walk around in, and sit down on one of the many terraces in summer, and inside the little restaurants in winter. But one restaurant is my favorite: Golden Stäbchen on Hinter Gasse. It’s a Vietnamese/Thai/Chinese restaurant, owned by a Vietnamese family and open every day of the year from 10am until 10pm. The food is fresh, tastes authentic and it’s unbelievably cheap. For less than €15 for two people you can have each a fresh squeezed juice, 2 spicy soups and a main meal big enough that you cannot finish alone so you have to share. Throw in some krabben chips (prawn chips) and mini loumpia’s and you got yourselves a nice dinner! The spicy soup (number 16a, I know it off by heart…) tastes amazing. With the flavors of koriander and lemongrass (among many other spices) and some Vietnamese music in the background I am being transported back to the streets of Vietnam where I sat a few years ago next to the road on tiny stools with my knees sticking out above the tiny table, slurping my soup while the tuktuks and scooters whiz past.

I know-I know, when in Germany you should be eating brat wurst (the jokes about German sausage are the würst… Ha… Punny…) and drinking beer, but say you have already done that one time too many, then I really recommend going to Golden Stäbchen in Füssen en enjoy the delicious flavors of the far east.
