Every time I see a small charity or fundraiser asking to fund something and it is something I care about, I will donate some money. It is nowadays so easy, just with a few clicks and you’ve given money to a cause you care about. Even a small donation of $5 can be enough to feel good, because you’re doing something good. You’re helping another person. Just the other day I came across a post on Facebook from Humans of New York (HONY, an awesome page by the way, check it out and like it!). It was a photo of a cameraman who worked on an item about HONY and with it came a little story about how he and his wife adopted a girl from Ethiopia. A very touching story and at the end, the photographer of HONY asked him is he could put the story up on Facebook. Sure, the cameraman replied, and hesitated a bit before asking, ‘Would there be any possibility that you could help us raise the adoption fees to get her a brother? We’ve already found him, but aren’t financially ready yet…‘ Then HONY created a donating- page and asked people online if they wanted to help making this family complete. The goal was $26.000 to get their son home. As I donated it was at $5.000, and after my donation I kept hitting the refresh button and saw the amount growing higher by the second. $100 more. Refresh. Another $200! Refresh. And again another $150 more… And guess what…..? Within one hour…. yes, ONE HOUR….. the goal was reached! And it didn’t stop there. Even though HONY told the family the money was there and that the crowdfunding usually dies down once the goal has been reached, the money kept on growing. By the end of the donation period (HONY set it to a day and a half to reach the goal), the total was almost $84.000. All the money goes to the family, $26.000 for the adoption procedure (including airfare and so to Ethiopia), and the rest for education of the two children. Isn’t that wonderful!? Every time I checked the website again, tears welled up in my eyes, touched by so many people caring about this family. It is great in a world where there is so much drama and horrible things happening, there is so much hope for humanity. I guess this is the truest form of SOCIAL media. I saw somebody saying ‘HONY (Humans of New York) brings out the best in HOPE (Humans of Planet Earth)‘, and isn’t that the truth….
